Mark Harper, MP for the Forest of Dean, welcomed students from Pillowell Community Primary School to Parliament last Tuesday 19th May. It was an historic day as the Speaker of the House of Commons announced his resignation.

One of the students was Sophie Collier, the winner of Mark’s Christmas card competition for 2008. As part of her prize, Sophie got the chance to climb the Clock Tower and hear Big Ben strike midday up close. Other members of the group had the opportunity to tour Parliament and see the House of Commons.

Mark commented on the visit:

“It was great to have Sophie and her friends and teachers come up to visit. We had a lot of great entries in the Christmas card competition last year. All the children that entered did a great job and put in a lot of hard work. Due to the high standard of entries, Sophie’s had to be really good to win and she deserved her prize.

They visited Parliament on an historic day as the Speaker announced his resignation – the first time a Speaker has been forced out in 314 years.”
