Forest MP to hold ‘expenses surgery’

Forest MP to hold ‘expenses surgery’

02 June 2009

Mark Harper, MP for the Forest of Dean, will hold an ‘expenses surgery’ this coming Friday 5th June between 3pm and 5pm at the Belle Vue Centre, Cinderford.

This will give any constituent who wants to the opportunity to talk to him about his own expenses and allowances.

Any constituent who wishes to take advantage of this opportunity should call Mark’s constituency office on 01594 823482 or email harperm@parliament.uk to make an appointment.

Commenting on his ‘expenses surgery’, Mark Harper said:

“There has been a lot of concern nationally about the system for MPs’ expenses and allowances. A number of MPs have done things which are wrong, unethical or, in some cases it appears, even criminal.

In my own case I have always had two tests for anything I claim. First, is it within the rules? Second, and probably more important, is it reasonable? I hope that, when the full details of my expenses and allowances are published by the House authorities in June, my constituents will consider that I have indeed been reasonable in all that I have claimed.

A number of constituents have written to me about this issue and I have written back to all of them and have managed to speak to some of them on the ‘phone. I wanted also to provide this opportunity for constituents to be able to discuss this issue face to face.”
